What to Expect at Your Whisky Tasting

Each of our whisky tasting experiences in London are hosted by distiller David Wood. David has worked with whisky for nearly 30 years and has vast experience of all aspects of the industry from working at the coal face of iconic distilleries across the West coast of Scotland to bottling and retailing quality single malt Scotch whiskies. David has hosted many whisky tasting events across Europe, both while he was Distillery Manager at the mighty Caol Ila Distillery on the Hebridean island of Islay and more recently as owner of Distilled Events.

Distilled Events is totally independent, we are not tied to any brands. This means we can serve whiskies that we love and quality drams that we are passionate about because they speak about where they were distilled and matured.

Provenance, placeness and terroir is very important to us. If you have particular preferences of which single malt whiskies you would like us to present, we can do that too.

Given our past experience in the whisky industry you can expect that your guests or clients will enjoy an engaging, entertaining, enjoyable, informative and above all authentic tasting experience hosted by passionate and knowledgeable people.

Private Corporate Whisky Tasting Experience!

A Very Special Whisky Tasting in Sheffield

I hosted a very special whisky tasting at the Tankersley Manor Hotel and Spa near Sheffield at the weekend. This booking was one of those that was postponed due to Covid 19. It was lovely to be asked to host the whisky tasting as it is the third that I have hosted for this company already. It is nice to know that they enjoy my tastings so much!

Whisky Dinner

My customer had invited their guests from all around the world to attend a multi day training session, I had been asked to host the whisky tasting at their dinner on the last night of the course. I served two of the whiskies with dessert and with the cheese boards. I decided to serve Auchentoshan 12 year old Lowland single malt whisky from the banks of the river Clyde in Glasgow. There was a lovely selection of cheeses on the table and I recommended that guests enjoy the lovely sherry matured Bunnahabhain 12 year old single malt whisky from the North East shores of the Isle of Islay in the Southern Hebrides where I spent a number of years living and working.

The Whisky

After the Auchentoshan 12 year old single malt whisky and the Bunnahabhain we tasted another 4 whiskies.

I regularly show Talisker 10 year old single malt whisky from the Isle of Skye. I love to give my guests Talisker to try as to me it is one of the best whiskies from Scotland for portraying it’s provenance, placeless and for speaking about terroir. I was lucky enough to live on the Isle of Skye for a while and even just the nose of Talisker reminds me of walking back from the pub in Portree on a Saturday night and experiencing the smell of peat reek coming from the croft kitchens.

Following Talisker I served Caol Ila 12 year old single malt whisky from the Isle of Islay. Caol Ila was the first whisky that when I tasted it didn’t simply taste of whisky. It wasn’t until I tasted Caol Ila in the old Earl Grey Inn on the Ashbourne Road in my home town of Leek in Staffordshire that my whisky journey really began. I loved Caol Ila so much that I started to visit the Isle of Islay regularly. Cutting a very long story short I then became the Distillery Manager at Caol Ila Distillery, making the equivalent of 18 million bottles of my favourite whisky every year. Some journey for a whisky enthusiast!

Following the Caol Ila I then served a new edition from Ardbeg Distillery on Islay, the fantastic Ardbeg Wee Beastie, a full bodied and heavily peated single malt whisky. The tasting concluded with one of my own single cask single malt whiskies, a Fraoch Mòinteach single cask single malt whisky distilled in 2003 at Bunnahabhain Distillery and bottled at the cask strength of 53.5% abv.

It’s So Good To Be Back….

I’m absolutely delighted to have finally made our Guided Speyside Distilleries Experience happen!

Due to covid, the last couple of years has been a test to say the least for Distilled Events, indeed if it wasn’t for one of my best whisky customers, Sean Ruffell of Organic North Wholesalers, suggesting that we launch Moorland Veg box my tasting and tours company would not exist.

Without the very, very hard work done by Leonie Wood, especially when she’s a pair of hands down when I’m gallivanting north of the border I wouldn’t have been able to achieve any of this, so thanks to Leonie for everything she does that allows me the time to do what I do.

Our group of ten guests from the UK, US and Norway had an amazing time in Speyside and the Highlands. We put together an itinerary of 15 distillery visits including tours and tastings at no less than 12 distilleries. Guests enjoyed beautiful meals at Burgie House and enjoyed coach travel supplied by Mayne’s Coaches, our driver Alfie ensuring our guests were looked after and arrived on time at each distillery experience.

I’d like to thank Bob Krizek for asking me to arrange this trip nearly 3 years ago, after 2 postponements due to covid and after having to find new accommodation at the last minute after a major fire at the house we had originally booked, I’m so glad we finally delivered the experience for Bob and his guests.

We had tastings and tours at:

Benriach Distillery

Glen Garioch Distillery

Blair Athol Distillery

Aberfeldy Distillery

Glendronach Distillery

Glenfarclas Distillery

Glenallachie Distillery

Balvenie Distillery

Wolfburn Distillery

Pulteney Distillery

Benromach Distillery

Glenmorangie Distillery (thanks Eddie Them for giving us such a great afternoon!).

We put together a team of helpers and suppliers that made for a magical trip for our guests. Thanks goes to Alfie and Mayne’s Coaches of Buckie for the fantastic coach service, to Maeve & Fiona from the Annoying Little Jobs Company for your housekeeping service, to the team at Burgie House for letting us stay in your fantastic, cosy, (but incredibly large!) property, to the incredible Anne Barns-Graham for the lovely food, laughs and wine drinking solidarity and to Justina Dailydytė of My Scottish Diary who helped to deliver what was a totally magical experience for our guests, capturing some wonderful pics for us all to treasure, and joining in with the wine solidarity (I can’t thank you enough for all your help Justina and it was great that you were able to join us).

Between us we absolutely smashed it and my heartfelt thanks goes to you all for making it such a memorable experience, for helping me to get Distilled Events back on it’s feet again and for helping me be….well…me again.

We’ve already arranged the dates for our next Guided Speyside Distilleries Experience. This will be a 7 night experience commencing Monday 3rd April 2023 at Burgie House, Forres. If you would like to join us please contact me on 07875 405 980 or send an email via the contact page.

Our Guided Distillery Experiences include your accommodation, all meals prepared by our chef, a full itinerary of distillery tours and tastings, transport to and from all distillery experiences, and myself as your host throughout.

You would be welcome to join us in Scotland!

Slainte!

Whisky Tastings

Would you like a whisky tasting at your office or a whisky tasting at home? We host private whisky tastings for corporate events and for private parties anywhere in the UK.

Private Whisky Tastings

Our whisky tastings are different to those hosted by our competitors. Our whisky tastings are authentic. We’ve lived and worked at the coal face of spirit distilling. We’ve managed iconic malt whisky distilleries in Scotland, so when we talk to you about whisky, it is with passion and experience. We are not trying to sell you anything other than Scotland and its gift to the world, Scotch whisky.

We don’t work for any big brands, we are not sales representatives and we are not brand ambassadors but what we are is passionate about good single malt whisky. When we host your whisky tasting we’ll present to you whiskies that we love.

What to Expect From Our Private Whisky Tastings

  • Hosted by either David Wood former Caol Ila Distillery Manager and whisky bottler
  • A tasting of at least six single malt whiskies from around Scotland
  • You’ll hear about the history of the Scotch whisky industry
  • A look into whisky production
  • How to taste whisky and choosing glassware
  • A fun and factual event exploring Scotch whiskies whilst avoiding the usual anecdotes
