Glasgow University Whisky Tasting Experience

Whisky Tasting in Glasgow

We were delighted to be asked to host a whisky tasting experience for 200 delegates from all over the world at a conference at Glasgow University recently. We presented 4 single malt whiskies from all over Scotland, each representing regionality and different flavour profiles.

We set up four whisky stations around the room so that delegates could move around easily, speak to us about the whiskies and about the whisky industry before moving on to the next dram. I was joined by two industry colleagues, Justina and Rebecca to help engage with as many conference delegates as possible during the evening.

At the beginning of the tasting I spoke briefly to the whole group to explain how the tasting would work and a little about the Scotch whisky industry in general and how single malt whisky makes the incredible journey from field to table.

It was great to be able to engage with so many people at such a great event and to enthuse about all things Scotland and single malt Scotch whisky. Our tastings showcase Scotland’s gift to the world and are a great way to encourage people to get together, have fun, socialise and relax.

Glasgow Whisky Tasting – The Single Malt Whiskies

We selected four single malt Scotch whiskies to help demonstrate both regionality and the difference in flavour profiles. Two of the whiskies were from the Isle of Islay where Justina and I used to work. One of the Islay whiskies was smokey / peaty, whilst the other was rich, maritime and fruity. The other two single malt whiskies were from the Highland region and Speyside.

Here is the set list for our whisky tasting experience in Glasgow:

  1. Tomintoul 10 year old Speyside single malt whisky 40%abv
  2. Glengoyne 12 year old Highland single malt whisky 43%abv
  3. Bunnahabhain 12 year old Islay single malt whisky 46.3%abv
  4. Caol Ila 13 year old Islay single malt whisky 43% bottled by Gordon and MacPhail

Whisky Tasting Experience for your Wedding in Scotland

A Whisky Tasting for your Wedding Drinks Reception in Scotland

If you are planning to have your wedding in Scotland there are many incredibly special venues to choose from including beautiful castles, country houses and fantastic hotels. We are often asked to host whisky tasting experiences in lots of different wedding venues all over Scotland.

A whisky tasting is a great way to entertain your wedding guests on the evening before your wedding or even the day after if your guests are staying for a few days.

Many of our whisky tastings in Scotland take place at pre wedding day drinks receptions especially if guests are travelling from far and wide and are staying at the venue for a few days.

About Distilled Events

We’ve worked in the whisky industry for many years and have been involved in every aspect of the Scotch whisky industry. For many years David was Distillery Manager at the largest malt whisky distillery on the West coast of Scotland, the mighty Caol Ila Distillery on the Isle of Islay. He also worked at the iconic Lagavulin Distillery where he worked alongside the Lagavulin Legend, Iain MacArthur himself.

We are totally independent and don’t work for any brands so we can present any whiskies that we, or our clients want. Our tastings are as authentic as can be as well as fun and engaging. If you ask us to host a whisky tasting at your wedding in Scotland you can be sure that we’ll keep your guests entertained.

Exclusive Whisky Tastings in Scotland

Each of our tastings are bespoke and tailored to your requirements. Often our tastings in Scottish castles and country houses are very informal. Typically we will set up in an area in the venue and we’ll engage with guests individually or in small groups throughout the afternoon or evening, talking to them about all things Scotch whisky and serving them with a few drams from around Scotland.

We provide everything needed for the tasting including the glassware and the whiskies. Your whisky tasting will be hosted by David Wood.

A Special Whisky Tasting at Dundas Castle

An Exclusive Whisky Tasting in Edinburgh

I was delighted to be asked to host a special whisky tasting at a wedding at Dundas Castle, South Queensferry near Edinburgh recently by Maximillion Events Management Agency. I hosted the whisky tasting for a group of 35 guests from around the world who were all attending the wedding the following day. The whisky tasting took place in The Armoury which is located inside the 600 year old Auld Keep within the grounds of the castle.

Whisky Tasting Edinburgh

In preparation for the tasting the incredibly helpful and welcoming team at Dundas Castle had decorated The Armoury and lit a fire in the largest dog grate that I have ever seen! The fire spat and crackled and helped to create a lovely atmosphere once my guests had a arrived for a dram or two.

During the evening I presented four malt whiskies from around Scotland. I wanted to ensure that our guests experienced a range of different flavour profiles from light and fruity right through to heavy and smokey. Before we tasted the first dram I talked through how to select the perfect glassware for tasting whisky and how to taste. We touched on controversial subjects such as water, ice and other things that are often enjoyed with whiskies.

Whisky Tasting at Dundas Castle

Once our guests had arrived I gave them each a glass of whisky and asked them to spend a wee bit of time warming the drams up in their hands, the room had been cold before the fire was lit so a little bit of warmth would help the drams open up. I served the drams in small ‘perfect dram’ glasses which are similar to a Glencairn glass in shape but smaller in size. I find that these glasses are great for using in tastings as they are fluted and so the aromas are pointed towards the imbibers nose rather than escaping in to the room.

The Whiskies

I selected four malt whiskies from around Scotland:

  1. Tomintoul 10 year old Speyside Single Malt Whisky. 40% abv. Established in Ballindalloch, Banffshire in 1965. Matured in selected ex oloroso sherry casks and American oak.
  2. Tobermory 12 year old Island (Mull) Single Malt Whisky. 46.3% abv. Established 1798. Isle of Mull, Argyll. Matured in American oak.
  3. Bunnahabhain 12 year old Islay Single Malt Whisky. 46.3% abv. Established 1881. Isle of Islay, Argyll. Matured in ex oloroso sherry casks and American oak.
  4. Fraoch Mointeach Islay Blended Malt Scotch Whisky. 57%abv. Matured in American oak.

Whisky Tasting Aboard The Silver Dolphin, Loch Lomond

Corporate Whisky and Chocolate Pairing in Scotland

We were delighted to be asked to host a whisky and chocolate pairing by a Glasgow company who were looking after a group of 50 guests in the Loch Lomond area, keeping them entertained with lots of different activities in the hills and glens of the southern Highlands.

The Silver Dolphin

The whisky and chocolate pairing took place on board The Silver Dolphin which is a cruiser operated by Sweeney’s Cruise Company. I arrived at the ferry landing at Balloch in plenty of time to set up my glasses and pour the drams before we set off to collect our guests from Cameron House on the shores of Loch Lomond.

Whisky and Chocolate Pairing

During the tasting our guests enjoyed 3 single malt Scotch whiskies perfectly paired with 3 beautiful handmade chocolates from The Highland Chocolatier in Grandtully, a small village that sits between Aberfeldy and Pitlochry in the Highlands. Each of the chocolates were created by Ian Burnett to pair specifically with each whisky. Here are the pairings that we decided to show:

Auchentoshan 12 year old Lowland single malt whisky – Orange with a hint of clove velvet truffle

Bunnahabhain 12 year old Islay single malt whisky – Espresso velvet truffle

Caol Ila 12 year old Islay single malt whisky – Lemongrass and lime velvet praline
